SHAWNEE – University of Central Missouri made the most of its shot opportunities as it defeated No. 15-ranked (USC) Oklahoma Baptist University 3-0 on Thursday night.
The Jennies scored their trio of goals on 11 shots. Leading the way for the visitors was Kassie Newsom who tallied a goal and an assist.
Early in the first half, OBU nearly struck first. A cross came near the left post to
Alanna Bloomingdale, however, her mid-air shot came right to Jennies' goalie Lindsey Johnson. That was one of her eight saves on the night.
Less than two minutes later, the visitors broke the scoreless tie. A through ball from Newsom along the right side was picked up by Julia Kristensen who sprinted into the 18-yard box and fired to the lower-left corner.
That 1-0 score remained until 16:20 left until halftime. Newsom was just outside the 18, and she launched a shot into the upper-right corner doubling Central Missouri's lead.
OBU did have a few more opportunities in the first half with attempts from
Annie Louthan and
Tori Kitchel, but Johnson denied those two attempts.
After halftime,
Mia Pendleton secured a couple of saves within the first six minutes to keep the tally at 2-0. Unfortunately, that could not propel the home team's offense. Louthan, Kitchel,
Jessie Sims and
Olivia Kenas all fired on-target, but none found nylon.
The Jennies later added one more goal on a shot right in front of the net by Emily Kramer.
By game's end, OBU had advantages in shots (17-11) and corners (5-4).
Next on the schedule for the Bison is a road date on Saturday, September 4 at No. 7 Dallas Baptist. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
