SHAWNEE - The Oklahoma Baptist softball team is set to open a brand new season this weekend as they head to Las Vegas for the Vegas Desert Stinger where they have five games to open the 2020 year.
The Bison will open the year on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Regis followed by a 2 p.m. game against Texas-Tyler. They'll follow with Minot State at 11:30 and UC-San Diego at 2 p.m. on Saturday and then close the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest against Mary on Sunday. All games will feature live audio on obubison.com with Taylor Maples.Â
The Bison enter 2020 under second year Head Coach
Sam Maples and will present a new look this season 14 newcomers including nine first year players. OBU was 17-39 a season ago with an 11-32 record in GAC play, missing the GAC Tournament.
Maples looks forward to what this team can present this season and will look to her returners for leadership on a fairly young team.
It starts in the circle where
Katie Long returns for her junior season and will lead a large pitching staff which includes five pitchers. Long was 12-21 a season ago with a 5.29 ERA. Long pitched 177.0 innings with 10 complete games and two shutouts while striking out 123 batters to go with 66 walks.Â
Offensively,
Cheyenne Demaree returns for her senior season as one of the power hitters for OBU. Demaree hit .276 a season ago six doubles, eight home runs, and a team leading 40 RBI.
McKenna Anderson also returns after hitting .316 a year ago with three doubles.
Defensively, Anderson had a 1.000 fielding percentage while
Tyra Garcia and
Shelby Savage return for the season. Garcia his drove in 19 runs and had a field percentage over .950 while Savage had seven doubles and drove in 20 runs and saw the most action defensively.
