SHAWNEE – The Oklahoma Baptist University Athletics Department celebrated a successful and memorable 2018-19 academic year Monday night at the fifth annual Bison Sports Awards inside Raley Chapel.
The men's basketball program, under the direction of first-year head coach
Jason Eaker, was the night's big winner with Antonio Wade earning men's Newcomer of the Year, and Harrison Stoddart being named men's Breakout Athlete of the Year, while Brantly Thompson was recognized with the men's Heart of a Bison Award.
Football's Cagney Roberson and track's McKae Mitchell took home the department's highest honors as they were named 2018-19 Outstanding Senior Athletes.
Awards for individual performance of the year went to baseball's Jake Gozzo and women's swim's Victoria Fonville.
The women's soccer team was lauded for its community service efforts, receiving the Made a Difference Award, and the volleyball team repeated as the #DavCup champion, awarded annually to the team that best supports their fellow student-athletes and engages with the community.
Women's golf received the Team Academic Award, and men's swim's Jonathan Stewart and women's track and cross country's Emily Sechrist were recognized with the Scholar Athlete Award.
In a pair of new categories, OBU health and human performance professor Dr. Linda McElroy earned the Faculty Mentor Award, while Joy Carl, director of international student services, was honored with the Advocate for Athletics Award.
