Track Impressive in Return Meet at OU

NORMAN – Oklahoma Baptist returned to the Mosier Indoor Center for the second time in a week and had a solid showing at the J.D. Martin Invitational. The event, hosted by the University of Oklahoma, had 10 teams primarily of NCAA Division I affiliation competing.

The Bison were at the same facility last week at the Central Oklahoma Invitational and will again return later this month for the Great American Conference Championships.

"The meet was successful allowing our athletes to learn more about the facility," OBU Coach Ford Mastin said. "Our athletes are getting accustomed to the climate which is important since the conference meet is here next month."

OBU had a number of first-place finishes, including both 4 x 400 relay teams. The group of McKae Mitchell, Shirene Van Der Westhuizen, JoziRose Mayfield and Cameka Witter finished with a time of 3:52.78, 10 full seconds over its nearest competitor.

Mitchell also impressed in the 400 meters with a time of 56.01, five seconds faster than the second-place runner.

Teammates Tesa Potter and Leah Molter also had good showings. Potter won the 100 meters in 2:59, a half-second faster than second place. Molter was nosed at the tape in the 60-meter hurdles. Sasha Wells of Oral Roberts beat her by one-hundredth of a second at 8.54.

The men's 4 x 400 team won first finishing five seconds ahead of Abilene Christian with a time of 3:21.71. The quarter consisted of Savyon Milton, Devontrae Young, Shirvante Knauls and Eric Van der Walt.

Both Young and Knauls also had second-place finishes in their individual events. Young was just .06 seconds off the winning pace in the 200 meters. Zac Martin of Oklahoma beat Young with a time of 22.10. Knauls was .70 seconds behind the winner in the 400 meters with a time of 49.21.

Nathaniel Worley finished second in high jump against Southwestern College's Stephen Wells. Both cleared 6-6 ¼ but Wells was the winner because of the fewest misses.

OBU will next compete at the Pittsburg State Invitational. The two-day meet begins Friday, Feb. 1.
