Lady Bison Split on Day 1 of Crossover

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist volleyball split on the opening day of the GAC/MIAA Crossover. The Lady Bison dropped Missouri Southern State, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-17), before falling in a five-set thriller to Emporia State, 3-2 (17-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 18-20).
 
In Friday's first match, OBU hit a season-best .297, paced by Taylor Williams and Malia Leatherland who swung .600 and .400, respectively, to combine for 16 kills. Mikayla Watson led the team with a match-best 14 kills to go along with two service aces. Jenna Gremmel did well setting up her teammates, serving up a three-set season-high of 47 assists.
 
On the defensive side of the court, OBU carried over the performance at the net from Tuesday evening, with five total blocks. Brecken Roquemore recorded three block assists to increase her team-leading season total to 22 total blocks, while Williams, Leatherland and Gremmel each had two block assists. Kelsi Chavez, who took over libero duties midway through Tuesday's match, led the team with 20 digs.
 
In the second match of the day, Watson and Nicole Fleitman combined for 31 kills, with Watson tallying a team-best 17 kills on 67 attack attempts. Gremmel and Hayden Blair split time at setter, handing out 25 and 23 assists respectively.
 
Roquemore continued her hot streak at the net, logging 10 total blocks, including a career-high nine block assists. Chavez and Watson tied for the team lead with 22 digs, while Gremmel (19), Blair (13) and Leatherland (10) also all touched double figures in the category.
 
Oklahoma Baptist (5-7) return to action tomorrow for a 10 a.m. tilt against Pittsburg State before finishing out the Crossover against Southwest Baptist at 4 p.m.
