Lady Bison Close out Crossover with Win

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist volleyball wrapped up the GAC/MIAA Crossover on Saturday, going -1 on the day. The Lady Bison first fell in a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 16-25, 23-25) contest to Pittsburg State before taking down Southwest Baptist by a score of 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 25-16).
 
In OBU's opening match of the day, the Lady Bison hit .225 for 57 kills, led by Mikayla Watson with 17 on 43 attack attempts. Nicole Fleitman and Taylor Williams also touched double figures with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Hayden Blair gave out a match-high 32 helpers, and Jenna Gremmel dished out 15 assists.
 
The Lady Bison defense collected 67 digs in the four-set affair, paced by Kelsi Chavez with 24. Watson picked up a double-double after cleaning up 12 digs, and Malia Leatherland had 11. Brecken Roquemore and Nicole Fleitman each recorded a match-high four block assists.
 
In the final match of the Crossover for Oklahoma Baptist, the Lady Bison laid down 47 kills, including a season-best 14 from Williams and an additional 10 from Watson. Blair continued to oversee the bulk of responsibility at setter, handing out 28 assists, though Gremmel also contributed 12.
 
Williams, building off the momentum of her 14 kills, also led the team with nine total blocks, including two solo efforts; OBU had a season-high 13 total blocks in the match. Watson, Chavez and Leatherland kept the back row clean with 13, 12 and 11 digs, respectively. The defense overall held the Bearcats to just a .068 hitting percentage.
 
The Lady Bison (6-8, 1-0 GAC) return to Great American Conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Durant to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m.
