Volleyball Splits in Denton

DENTON, Texas – Oklahoma Baptist volleyball earned a split in their triangular at Kitty Magee Arena on the campus of Texas Woman's University. The Lady Bison claimed a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-21) sweep of Dallas Baptist before dropping a 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-25) decision to Texas Woman's.
 
The Lady Bison were locked in to open the first match of the day against the Patriots, hitting .345 and committing only one attack error. Nicole Fleitman and Mikayla Watson each laid down three kills, with Fleitman hitting an incredibly efficient .750 for the frame.
 
Oklahoma Baptist continued their efficient attacking in the second frame, connecting on 35.1 percent of their attacks. Malia Leatherland and Taylor Williams led the charge, combining for nine kills. The defense held DBU to four kills and a -.038 attack percentage.
 
Showing their grit in the third set to claim the sweep, Watson accounted for nearly half the squad's kills in the set with six. Hayden Blair handed out 12 assists.
 
Watson finished with a team-high 11 kills, followed by Leatherland with 10. Blair posted a match-high 23 assists. Defensively, Leatherland led the way with 10 digs, while Fleitman recorded seven total blocks.
 
In the second match, OBU started slow, but won the second set to avoid the sweep. Leatherland hit .583 with seven kills in the frame, while Watson supplemented the attack with an additional six kills. Kelsi Chavez kept the floor clean with eight digs.
 
For the match, Watson scored 18 kills and Leatherland 16. Blair led the squad with 25 assists and Jenna Gremmel gave out 18 helpers.
 
Defensively, Chavez finished with 22 digs, while three other players: Watson (16), Blair (13) and Leatherland (10) finished in double figures.
 
Oklahoma Baptist (8-10, 2-1 GAC) returns to conference play with a Great American Conference match up against East Central on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
