SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist volleyball dropped to 2-1 in Great American Conference play after falling in a five-set affair to Southern Nazarene, 3-2 (17-25, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 13-15), on Thursday night in Shawnee.

After a slow start, the Lady Bison fought hard to even the score at 1-1 while capitalizing on 10 attack errors by SNU in the second set. The OBU offense then started clicking in the third set, with
Mikayla Watson and
Malia Leatherland combining for eight kills with four apiece. Oklahoma Baptist hit .316 in the set to take a 2-1 lead.

However, a tightly contested fourth set went to Southern Nazarene, and despite a furious rally to pull within 14-13 in the pivotal fifth set, the Lady Bison were saddled with their first loss in conference play.

Leatherland laid down a team-high 19 kills, followed by Watson with 13.
Jenna Gremmel handed out 34 assists.

Kelsi Chavez paced the defense with 30 digs on the night, while Watson and Blair finished with 19 and 16 digs, respectively.

Oklahoma Baptist (7-9, 2-1 GAC) return to action on Saturday with nonconference action against Dallas Baptist and Texas Woman's on the road in Denton, Texas. The Lady Bison take on DBU in a neutral site contest at 12 p.m. before turning around to face host TWU at 2 p.m.
