OBU Splits with Tech

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist salvaged a split of its doubleheader with Arkansas Tech Saturday, claiming a 6-5 win after falling 7-4 in the opener.

In the first game, the Bison trailed 2-0 before tying the game in the fourth. Jake Gozzo singled to left and Garrett McKee doubled before Brett Berghammer came through with a two-out, two-run single.

The Bison led 3-2 in the fifth after Juan Gonzalez singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by Zane Gelphman, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by PJ Harris.

The Wonder Boys took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the eighth, but the Bison tied it in the home half on an RBI single by Brett Bloomfield.

Tech scored three in the top of the ninth and claimed the win.

OBU had 11 hits, including two each by Bloomfield, Gonzalez, Josh Timms and McGee.

Nick Burnham took the loss in relief.

Zach Fowler went the distance for the win in the second game, striking out six.

OBU fell behind 1-0 in the second but scored twice in the home half. Gelphman tripled and scored on a base hit by Harris, who eventually scored on a fielder's choice by McKee.

Tech tied it in the fourth but OBU answered with two runs in that inning when Harris singled ahead of the two-run home run into the breeze and over the center field fence by Gozzo.

Harris added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-2 but Tech scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game.

OBU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh before Degan Harte uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Gonzalez to score the game-winner.

The Bison had six hits, including three by Harris and two by Gelphman.

OBU hosts East Central in a non-conference game Tuesday at 6 p.m.
