Lady Bison Swat Hornets in Five Sets

BETHANY, Okla. – (HTML Stats) In the second match between the schools in seven days, Oklahoma Baptist defeated Emporia State 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 26-28, 16-25, 15-7) Saturday at the GAC/MIAA Crossover to even up the season series.

The Lady Bison (6-7) and Hornets (7-5) played another five-set match Sept. 9, with Emporia State coming out on top. Saturday's win snapped a two match skid for OBU as the Lady Bison wrapped up the final regular season tournament.

Oklahoma Baptist jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wire-to-wire victories in each of the first two sets. The Lady Bison did not trail in the match until ESU took a 24-25 lead in the third. After the Hornets stayed alive with an extended set win in the third, they were able to force a decisive fifth set with a win in the fourth.

Trailing 3-4 in the final set, Sophia Couto knotted the score with a kill and sparked a 7-1 run for the final lead change of the match. OBU cruised to an eight-point victory in the final set to improve their record to 2-3 in five-set matches.

Five players finished with double-digit kills and four Lady Bison recorded double-doubles in the victory. Cadyn Laing led the way with 14 kills and added 18 digs for her first double-double of the season. Hayden Blair registered a season-high 52 assists, Suzanny Figueiredo earned 25 digs and Couto had eight block assists.

Following 13 straight matches away from the Noble Complex to open the season, the Lady Bison will host Southeastern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19 in the home opener. Tickets are available for purchase HERE.
