SHAWNEE – After opening the 2017 season with a pair of road contests last week, the Oklahoma Baptist men's soccer team is set for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. against Oklahoma City University at the OBU Soccer Complex. Thursday's match is one of just two home outings for the Bison for the entire first month of the season.
Oklahoma Baptist (1-0-1) have gotten off to a hot start offensively, averaging a Great American Conference-best 2.5 goals per match through their first two outings.
Thiago Dos Santos has been the main cog in OBU's offensive system, ranking second in the GAC in points per match (2.5) after scoring two goals and providing one assist in his first two appearances.
Martin Romero is tied with Dos Santos for the team lead on two goals, while
Jonathan Martinez has found the back of the net once.
Defensively, the Bison have given up over 17 shots per match, but opponents have had a hard time getting a proper look at goal with only .343 percent of their shots being put on frame.
Stormy Arledge and
Josue De Paz have done well as the outside backs, each contributing one shot, while De Paz has also provided one assist.
Parker Lawter has played every available minute between the stick, posting a 1.80 goals-against average and recording eight saves.
Oklahoma City (4-0) are unblemished to start the season. The Stars' offense has averaged 1.5 goals per match away from Stars Field, and are led by joint leading goal scorers Henrik Verolet and Aboubakr Diallo who each have three goals. Opponents are averaging 11.8 shots per match, but OCU's Vladimir Kalajdzic has allowed just one goal in 360 minutes of action.
The two teams met last season, with OBU falling, 5-3, in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma Baptist will be looking for their first win in the series since a 2-1 double-overtime triumph in 2011 in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
