SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist meets Southwestern Oklahoma State in a three-game Great American Conference baseball series, starting Friday at 6 p.m. at Bison Field at Ford Park.
The teams also play a 1 p.m. twin bill Saturday, at which OBU will recognize military men and women and first responders.
Jinny Parra will get his first shot at sole possession of the OBU career pitching wins record in this series. Parra is 35-10 and is in his senior season. David Hocking and Darin Fowler both finished their careers at 35-13. Parra is expected to pitch Saturday.
OBU has a 72-70 lead in the all-time series. The 142 games played makes the SWOSU rivalry the No. 5 most-repeated contest for the Bison. OBU took two of three games in Weatherford last season, including a 4-2 win in the series finale.
Southwestern Oklahoma State enters the series at 13-18 overall and 9-10 in the Great American Conference. They had two games of the Southeastern series rained out. The Bulldogs enter the fray with a team .239 batting average, led by Jason Nichols with a .336 average. Rafael Otero has a team-leading five home runs and Daniel Richardson tops the SWOSU RBI category with 20.
Southwestern has a team earned run average of 6.20. Jeremy Smith leads the starting rotation with a 3.93 ERA. Quintin Dougherty leads the team with four saves.
The Bison are 22-12 overall and 13-8 in the Great American Conference. OBU has a team batting average of .307, led by
Brett Berghammer at .375.
Josh Timms and
Zane Gelphman share the team home run lead with five apiece. Gelphman leads the squad with 40 runs batted in.
The pitching staff sports an amazing 3.15 earned run average.
