SHAWNEE – After a solid performance last week, Phillip Spess was named the Great American Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Spess, a senior from Cleveland, Oklahoma, took first in the pole vault at the Butler County Grizzly Invitational. He dominated the competition with a height of 15–9, defeating the field by more than 14 inches.
Â
The performance met the NCAA Division II national championship provisional standard, making Spess just the second GAC member to accomplish the feat.
Â
It was the first award for Spess this year, and the second for Bison field athletes.
