Bison Split to Take HSU Series

ARKADELPHIA – Oklahoma Baptist rallied for two runs in the seventh to take a split Saturday for a series win at Henderson State.

OBU lost the first game Saturday 10-5 before winning the three-game finale 2-1.

Nathan Thompson (6-3) took a shutout into the fifth inning, but allowed an unearned run on a passed ball for a 1-0 Reddies lead.

Zach Eschberger held the Bison scoreless through six innings, but OBU broke through in the top of the seventh. Kevin Olmeda drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and with two outs, Brandon Cuddy singled in the eventual game-winning run.

Henderson State got the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Thompson worked out of the mess.

Thompson had five strikeouts and limited HSU to three singles.

OBU had six singles by six players in the win.

The Bison had a three-run lead in Saturday's opener, getting a two-run triple by Ryan Joyce and an RBI single by Felipe Gonzalez in the first inning.

HSU tied it in the second, but the Bison went ahead 4-3 in the third on an RBI ground out by Gonzalez.

The Reddies went ahead to stay with a three-run third inning.

OBU got its final run in the seventh on a home run by Joyce.

Carson McPherson (5-3) took the loss. Brad Adams struck out the side in his one inning of work.

The Bison had 10 hits in the game, including three by Joyce, who was a single short of hitting for the cycle. Cuddy also had three hits and Joseph Moran added two.

OBU hosts St. Gregory's Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Strike Out Cancer Game.
