Bison Sweep York to Open Season

Oklahoma Baptist put together 33 runs on 27 hits to open baseball season with a 22-3, 11-5 sweep of York Friday at Bison Field.

Sophomore catcher Cody Ziegler belted three home runs and drove in six runs while Brandon Cuddy drove in six on two hits.


The Bison opened the season with a six-run bottom of the first inning, using a two-run double by Cuddy, a sacrifice fly by Felipe Gonzalez, a run-scoring error and a two-run triple by Kevin Olmeda.

Back-to-back home runs by Ziegler and Gonzalez made it 8-0 in the third.

York scored twice in the fourth, including an RBI double by Billy Johnson, but OBU answered with six in the fifth and eight in the sixth.

Joseph Moran had a sacrifice fly, Gonzalez scored on a throwing error and Dustyn Cook singled in a run ahead of a three-run home run by Cuddy for the six runs in the fifth.

Gonzalez and Moran had RBI singles and Cook added a sacrifice fly to get the first three runs across in the sixth. Austin Cooper then added a two-run single and Hunter Heath closed out the first-game scoring with a three-run home run.

Heath, Gonzalez and Moran had three hits each in the first game, with Cuddy and Olmeda adding two in the 16-hit onslaught.

Jinny Parra (1-0) went five innings for the win, striking out four and allowing two runs.

Nathan Thompson (1-0) went five scoreless innings for the win in the second game, allowing two hits while striking out four.

OBU broke a scoreless tie in the second with a two-run double by Gonzalez, and RBI single by Moran and an RBI ground out by Cuddy to take a 4-0 lead.

Olmeda drew an RBI walk in the third and the Bison added four in the fourth with an RBI single by Heath and a three-run home run by Ziegler.

Ziegler homered for two more runs in the sixth.

Moran had three hits in the game with Ziegler and Gonzalez adding a pair each to highlight the 11-hit outburst.

The 2-0 Bison host York for a final game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
