Tyler Roberts was elevated to defensive coordinator prior to the 2025 season after spending two years developing Oklahoma Baptist's outside linebackers. A former Division I student-athlete at Nicholls State and Fresno State, Roberts has helped oversee one of the top pass defenses in the Great American Conference while quickly ascending through the collegiate coaching ranks.
Since arriving on Bison Hill in 2023, Roberts has played a key role in the development of multiple All-GAC performers while helping Oklahoma Baptist establish itself as one of the conference's top defensive units. His work with the Bison defense helped produce All-Americans Scooter Baker and Brett Karhu, along with numerous All-GAC selections.
During Roberts' first season at OBU, the Bison led the Great American Conference and ranked eighth nationally in passing defense, allowing just 146.3 yards per game through the air. Oklahoma Baptist also finished second in the conference in sacks and passing efficiency defense. That defensive unit featured Baker, who led the GAC in tackles, and Karhu, who paced the conference in both sacks and tackles for loss.
Following two seasons as outside linebackers coach, Roberts earned a promotion to defensive coordinator beginning with the 2025 campaign. In his first season leading the defense, the Bison finished 17th nationally in passing defense while continuing to produce some of the conference's top defensive performers.
Prior to Oklahoma Baptist, Roberts served as defensive coordinator at College of the Desert in California. There, he oversaw all aspects of the program's defense while helping prepare student-athletes for four-year opportunities. He also served as a student assistant at Oklahoma State, and was a Training Camp intern for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
A native of Palm Desert, CA, Roberts played collegiately at Nicholls State before finishing his playing career at Fresno State. He earned his bachelor's degree from Nicholls State in 2022 before transitioning into coaching.
Football runs deep in Roberts' family. His grandfather, Don Roberts Jr., played professionally for the Baltimore Colts.
Roberts brings Division I playing experience, coordinator-level experience, and a proven track record of defensive development to Oklahoma Baptist's football staff as he continues to help shape the future of Bison football.
