Boll Weevils Claim Opener over Bison

MONTICELLO, Ark. -- Behind a six-RBI night from Eli Marvin and a decisive seven-run seventh, University of Arkansas at Monticello pulled away from Oklahoma Baptist for a 16-6 victory Thursday afternoon at Union Bank Park.

The Weevils (5-5, 4-0 GAC) struck first, capitalizing on a first-inning error and wild pitches to plate two runs. Marvin delivered an RBI single to give UAM an early cushion.

OBU (4-6, 1-3 GAC) responded in the third. Kalbe Latimer doubled to open the frame and later scored on a steal attempt by Ben Green. Moments later, Quinn Johnson launched a two-run homer to right-center, putting the Bison in front 3-2.

Johnson finished 2-for-2 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Bison added to their lead in the fifth. Zane Bennett singled home Johnson before Lucas Schaefer crushed a two-run homer down the left-field line, extending the advantage to 6-3. Schaefer went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI as OBU totaled 11 hits.

Monticello chipped away in the fifth on Marvin's two-run blast and tied the game in the sixth with a solo homer from Jackson Riedling. The Weevils then surged ahead with three runs in the sixth, highlighted by RBI singles from Daniel Lizarraga and Elijah Olaybal.

The game broke open in the seventh. UAM sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven runs on four hits and five hit batters. Marvin capped his dominant performance with a bases-clearing single that pushed the lead to double digits.

John White (2-0) earned the win in relief, while Nick Cozzi (0-1) took the loss.
