SHAWNEE – The Oklahoma Baptist (2-3) pitching staff was fantastic and added with some highlight-reel plays on offense, the Bison downed Arkansas-Fort Smith 10-0 on Tuesday at Bobby Cox Field at Ford Park.
On the mound,
Landon Gutierrez,
Lucas Hernandez and
Teagon Standlee went against a UAFS squad that had tallied 28 runs in its previous three contests.
That trio of Bison pitchers ended up allowing no runs, four hits, fanned 10 batters and got eight fly-ball outs and six groundouts. They also got out of a couple sticky situations early in the game too.
Offensively, OBU got its most runs of the season.
After two scoreless innings, the Bison broke through in the bottom of the third by taking advantage of patience at the plate. Three walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, setting the stage for a trio of RBI free passes that pushed the hosts in front 3–0. That cushion was more than enough for a pitching staff that never let UAFS settle in.
The Bison added to the lead in the sixth with a four-run outburst.
Lucas Schaefer delivered an RBI single,
Alex Sanchez ripped an RBI triple to the gap, and
Zane Bennett followed with an RBI double before scoring later in the frame.
Oklahoma Baptist continued to pressure the Lions defensively, stringing together quality at-bats throughout the afternoon.
Tui Amosa provided the biggest swing of the day in the seventh, launching a two-run homer to right field to make it 9–0. The Bison tacked on one final run in the eighth on a walk-off RBI single by
Jaxon McAuliff to cap the scoring at 10–0. That ended the contest early.
Four different players recorded multiple hits led by Amosa's and Bennett's three apiece.
Great American Conference play is next for OBU. On Feb. 13, the team is schedule to play a doubleheader with Southern Arkansas starting at 2 p.m.
