EDMOND – Oklahoma Baptist (4-6) defeated Western New Mexico 12-6 before a hard-fought loss to Oklahoma Christian on Saturday night at Tom Heath Field.
GAME ONE
Oklahoma Baptist rode an explosive offensive performance to a commanding 12-6 victory over Western New Mexico on Saturday. The Bison racked up 17 hits, including three home runs, to improve to 4-5 on the season, while the Mustangs fell to 3-6.
OBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, sparked by a leadoff triple from
Kaley Cook and a two-run single by
Greenlee Wells. WNMU responded with two runs in the second, capitalizing on a double by Ciara Spencer and a defensive miscue. However, the Bison countered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer from
Sammie Greene to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Mustangs fought back in the fourth, scoring three unearned runs to cut the deficit to 6-5. But the Bison erupted for five runs in the bottom half, with another home run from Greene and a two-run double from
Haley Hacker. Hacker later added a solo homer in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Jorja Barrett (2-2) secured the win, tossing five innings with three strikeouts, while Labraida Tenorio (1-3) took the loss. The Bison defense turned two key double plays to halt Mustang rallies.
GAME TWO
In a tightly contested matchup at Tom Heath Field, Oklahoma Christian (7-1) rallied late to defeat Oklahoma Baptist (4-6) by a score of 4-3 on Saturday.
The game saw OC take an early lead in the third before the Bison responded. Down 2-0, in the fourth,
Morgan Max's RBI single and
Greenlee Wells' run-scoring double tied the scoreboard up.
Two innings past before OBU gained its only lead of the contest. In the sixth, Max launched a solo homer to right center, briefly giving the green and gold a 3-2 advantage. However, Oklahoma Christian responded immediately, as Kate Paulsen sent home teammate Maci George for OC's third run.
The deciding moment came in the bottom of the seventh when George delivered a walk-off RBI double, scoring Kiley Brewster and securing the 4-3 win for the Eagles.
Jill Dickson (4-0) dominated in the circle for Oklahoma Christian, striking out 12 in a complete-game effort. Max (0-4) took the loss in relief. Starting pitcher
Jaycee Shaffer was solid, tossing 5.2 frames, allowing two earned runs and striking out four with no walks.
The Eagles outhit the Bison 11-3 and capitalized on three Oklahoma Baptist errors to seal the victory.
Next weekend, the Bison will play at home for the first time and take on Fort Hays State and Washburn on Feb. 14.
