EDMOND – Oklahoma Baptist earned an impressive early-season win over Central Oklahoma on Friday, claiming a 12-7 result over the host Bronchos during the UCO/OC Classic at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.
OBU also later fell to Rogers State to move the team's record to 3-5.
GAME ONE
Friday's game with UCO was one for the ages. In fact, in 29 all-time matchups with the Bronchos, OBU's 12 runs were the most ever scored against the school from Edmond. The 12-7 triumph also marked the most runs allowed by UCO since the 2022 season.
Down 3-0 at one point, the Bison turned things around with an incredible fourth frame.
Haley Hacker got things going with a bomb to right center. OBU followed with back-to-back singles from
Sammie Greene and
Morgan Max before a
Greenlee Wells double. In that at-bat, Wells put a shot down the left-field line and scored
Alli Bordwine.
Then towards the end of the fourth,
Kaley Cook and Hacker drove in two more with hits. That propelled the Bison to a 6-3 advantage, one they wouldn't relinquish.
OBU ran its lead to 9-3 an inning later with homers by Wells and
Hailey Stanford before the team closed the door in the top of the seventh. Stanford, Cook and Hacker all delivered RBI singles and pushed the advantage to 12-5.
By game's end, Hacker led with four hits and notched three RBI while Cook, Wells and Stanford provided multiple hits with multiple RBI. Also of note, Greene had two hits and a stolen base. In the circle,
Jaycee Shaffer earned the win tossing 5.1 frames, striking out four and allowing four earned runs.
GAME TWO
Rogers State took a close game through three innings and ended up run-ruling OBU 12-1 in the nightcap.
Early on, an
Ally Ryan sacrifice fly plated Hacker and tied the game at 1-1. However, RSU broke the tie in the second before a three-run fourth. In that inning, the Hillcats earned an RBI single by Bridgett Morales and two-run triple to right center by Mariah Belzer. At that point, Rogers State led 5-1.
In the fifth, the Bison threatened with a pair of base runners, but weren't able to connect and bring them home.
After that, RSU scored seven runs on six hits in the sixth en route to its fourth win of the season.
Tomorrow, the Bison will play Western New Mexico and Oklahoma Christian to conclude its weekend.
