SHAWNEE -- Oklahoma Baptist jumped out early but couldn't slow down Arkansas Tech's ground attack as the Wonder Boys ran for 233 yards and pulled away for a 38-25 Great American Conference victory Saturday afternoon.
OBU (2-8) grabbed a 10-7 first-quarter lead after
Carter Lowry's 27-yard field goal and a 100-yard kickoff return from
Matthew Young. Both of those point-scoring efforts meant a couple things for the OBU record book. Lowry now has a school-record 10 made field goals this fall while Young's return was the longest in school history.
However, Arkansas Tech (7-3) answered behind a dominant running performance from Bryson Roland, who finished with 171 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries. His one-yard score late in the first and two second-half touchdowns helped the Wonder Boys maintain control.
Tech led 21-17 at halftime following a three-yard touchdown run from Tracy Daniels, and Roland's four-yard score midway through the third extended the lead to 28-17.
The Wonder Boys' defense forced three interceptions, including one each by Tyrique Jones, Cam'ron Holmes, and Jonah Brown, keeping the Bison from closing the gap. Brown's interception set up a late field goal by Logan Tymeson to seal the win.
Arkansas Tech quarterback Carter Hensley went 8 of 19 for 106 yards and a touchdown — a 30-yard strike to JD DeCausmaker. For OBU,
Chad Mascoe threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with
Charles Whitebear and
Billy McDown, but also tossed three interceptions. Receiver
Nick Harris led the Bison with nine catches for 90 yards, while
Deuce Wise added 124 total yards.
OBU outgained Tech 358-346 in total offense but couldn't capitalize on several drives, including a missed field goal and a late fumble.
The Bison close the season next week on the road, visiting Southern Nazarene (1-9) at 2 p.m.
