Box Score SHAWNEE – The green and gold made their way to SNU for a 3:30 p.m. matchup against the Jets of Newman University. The Bison closed out the afternoon with a clean sweep over the Jets to begin the weekend of tournament action with a win.
Oklahoma Baptist went head-to-head with Newman University to open up the UCO/SNU Tournament with a 3-0 win. The Bison took set one at 25-16, set two at 25-11 and sealed the deal on the win with a 25-19 final for set three.
Across three sets, the Bison compiled 56.0 points, 45 kills, eight aces, 52 digs and three blocks.
Avery Hellmuth led the team with 10 kills.
Jill Leslie and
Jh'Kyah Head tallied seven kills a-piece.
Aubree McCann totaled three aces for OBU while
Emily Boyer and
Rylee Unruh each contributed two. The Bison defense saw block contributions from Leslie (2), Hellmuth (1), and Boyer (1).
Set 1
The opening set saw the Jets take the first couple of points. OBU quickly bounced back with a 3-0 rally to take the lead. The Jets tied things up at 3-3 with a kill but Head put the Bison back in business. Head started another three-score run with a block from Leslie and Unruh to bring the total to 5-3 and an error from the Jets added another for OBU. A trio of 3-0 runs for the green and gold ultimately gave the Bison the upper hand after a kill from Hellmuth made for a 22-13 score. A kill from Leslie and a pair of errors from Newman University closed out the first frame at 25-16.
Set 2
The Jets were first to the board in set two, but the Bison came in hot, taking the lead after kills from Unruh and McCann and an ace from McCann as well. With a 3-1 lead, NU managed to put another point on the board, but the Bison got right back to it, taking the next five points consecutively. As the Jets tallied their eighth point to the OBU's 14
th, Leslie incited another 5-0 run with a pair of kills, a pair of McCann aces and a kill from Head to bring the total to 19-8. With a 10-point lead at 21-11, a service error from NU triggered the final run of the set for the green and gold with a couple of kills from Hellmuth and an ace from Unruh to seal the deal at 25-11.
Set 3
The final set saw an incredible opening for OBU with an impressive 8-0 run to start the set. Leslie claimed the first point for the Bison with a kill. Boyer was next up with an ace. Out of the next six points, five came in the form of kills from McCann (2) and
Kenedy Houchin (3). As the Jets earned their first point, the green and gold followed with a couple points to see double digits. With a 17-9 score,
Lauren Safrit tabbed the next two points for OBU with back-to-back kills and a NU error placed the Bison ahead by 11 points at 20-9.
Allie Stricker brought the total to 22 for the Bison but the Jets found some fight left in the tank. A five-score run for NU saw a 22-17 score quickly creep up on OBU. Stricker added another kill to the board for the green and gold and Boyer came in with another ace to bring the Bison to match point. NU came up with a couple more points but an error from the Jets ultimately crushed their hopes of a comeback as the Bison took set three at 25-19, closing out the match with a perfect 3-0 finish.
OBU Volleyball will be back in action Friday morning at 11 a.m. to take on UCO in Edmond. The Bison will then head back to the SNU campus for a 4 p.m. meeting with Missouri Western State University. For more details, click
