SHAWNEE -- Midwestern State University (4-0-0) secured a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist University (0-3-0) in a closely contested matchup at the OBU Soccer Complex on Saturday.
The match remained scoreless through the first half despite decent opportunities for both squads. By the end of the 45-minute session, each team had attempted five shots on target each. However, Bison freshman keeper
Claire Stoermer and counterpart Allison Dellis stopped those attempts.
The lone goal of the match came in the 55th minute from Nyxalee Munoz of MSU. On a free kick, the ball bounced in front of OBU's keeper, however, her attempt to secure the ball trickled through her hands and into the net.
Stoermer's day was still impressive, as her 10 saves were the most by a Bison freshman since
Mia Pendleton secured 10 during the program's GAC Championship match against Ouachita on April 17, 2020.
Â
Dellis was equally impressive, saving all nine shots she faced, ensuring her team maintained a clean sheet. Oklahoma Baptist's offense was led by
Sam Sheffield,
Olivia Kenas, and
Annabelle Joski, who each had shots on target, but couldn't find a way past Dellis.
Midwestern State dominated possession in the second half, earning seven corner kicks and applying consistent pressure. Oklahoma Baptist, though resilient on defense, was unable to create many scoring opportunities after halftime with just four shots.
Next on the schedule for OBU is a Sept. 18 home date with Rogers State at 6 p.m.
