SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist was unlike its usual self during game one of the Saturday doubleheader versus Southwestern Oklahoma State at Bobby Cox Field. The Bison ended up falling 14-11, committed four errors and watched as the visitors collected 12 hits.
That defeat stopped the Bison's eight-game winning streak in the series over SWOSU. OBU moved its record to 23-14 and 12-11 in the Great American Conference in the process.
Key Leaders
- Alex Schroeder: Went 3-for-5 with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored.
- Troy Shields: Posted a 3-for-4 performance with a homer, two RBI and two runs.
- Isiah Lissade: Notched three hits.
- Will Joseph: Contributed two hits in four plate appearances.
- Nolan Feazle struck out six batters in four innings of work and allowed just two hits.
What Went Right
- OBU rallied. Down 6-1, the Bison clawed back to tie the game. In the fourth, Matt Marsic provided a two-run double while Spencer Dickinson drove in another. Then late in the frame, Austin Gonzales scored after an infield throwing error.
- In the fifth, Schroeder tied the game. He took a full-count pitch to left field and knotted the scoreboard at 6-all. Schroeder has 13 bombs this season, tied for sixth nationally.
- During those fifth and sixth frames, reliever Cameron Pool was solid, helping get a double-play ball and a couple strikeouts.
- The Bison trailed again late in the eighth. They followed with five consecutive hits including run-scoring knocks by Schroeder, Shields and Joseph.
What Went Wrong
- There were a pair of five-run innings for the Bulldogs. The first of those came right from the beginning. In that opening inning, there were two throwing errors and a passed ball which helped SWOSU jump ahead 5-0. Reece Burke added a two-run homer as well.
- During the seventh, a William Ellis wild pitch scored SWOSU's go-ahead run which made it 7-6. After that, Geoff Harlow smoked a two-run homer to boost the visitor's lead to 10-6. By the end of the top of the seventh, Southwestern had 11 runs.
- By game's end, the Bulldogs hit five home runs, a season-high.
On The Horizon
- The series finale entered a weather delay at 5:59 p.m. with the Bison leading 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth against SWOSU.
