SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist shortstop
Jacob Campbell not only provided the go-ahead home run in the seventh, but he also helped turn a rare triple play as the Bison defeated Pittsburg State 12-9 on Tuesday at Bobby Cox Field.
It was the sixth straight win over PSU for the green and gold and it boosted the team's record to 16-11.
What Went Right
- Offensive firepower. OBU saw eight players record hits, led by Rafael Gutierrez's three. In two games versus PSU this season, OBU scored 29 runs on 24 hits.
- A great start. In the second, PSU committed a costly error which led to four OBU runs. Campbell scored on the error before Alex Schroeder cleared the bases with a triple to center. That gave the hosts a 4-0 lead.
- Pitcher Ryan Turbeville and company shut out Pittsburg State through the first three frames, surrendering only two hits.
- The triple play. In the eighth, the visitors loaded the bases and brought up Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo who already had two doubles. The third baseman then roped a liner back up the middle, deflecting off Jordan Brewer's glove and into Campbell's. The junior then raced to complete the triple play, keeping OBU in front 9-8.
- Campbell's homer. The junior broke a 7-7 tie in the seventh when he rocketed a shot down the left-field line. That hit, his sixth long ball of the year, also scored Troy Shields.
- Jordan Brewer. For the second time in as many appearances, the lefty earned the save for the Bison. He tossed the final two innings, struck out three and induced the triple play.
- While the Bison did give up nine runs, each of their pitchers, Turbeville, William Ellis and Brewer all notched multiple strikeouts.
What Went Wrong
- The Gorillas scored runs from the fourth through the rest of the game. In fact, after OBU attained a 7-2 lead, PSU came back to tie the game in the seventh on a Cade Clemons RBI single.
On The Horizon
- A huge matchup with No. 8 Southern Arkansas (NCBWA) is on deck for OBU. They'll host the Muleriders for a three-game GAC series starting March 22 at 4 p.m.
