Bison Take Series Opener Against Cowboys

SEMINOLE – Oklahoma Baptist's Troy Shields tied his career-high in hits as the Bison run-ruled New Mexico Highlands 17-5 on Thursday at Lloyd Simmons Field at Seminole State College.

OBU improved to 3-1 with the win while the Cowboys dipped to 0-5.

Key Leaders
  • Shields collected four hits, tying a total he previously set two seasons versus Southwestern Oklahoma State. That included a double and solo homer. He also recorded seven putouts from his catcher position.
  • Rafael Gutierrez and Jaden Wiley, making their first starts of the season in right and left field, respectively, each tallied three this. Wiley attained two doubles while Gutierrez hit a three-run bomb in the fourth.
  • Rounding out OBU's top hitters was Isiah Lissade. He had three hits, a homer and four RBI.
  • On the mound, Brek Galbreath got the win tossing five innings with three strikeouts while allowing three runs.
What Went Right
  • Dominant offense. OBU secured a season-high 17 hits. That included four different players securing at least three knocks.
  • Wiley's and Gutierrez's performances. As mentioned above, those two made their first starts of the season. They both contributed immensely on offense, and Gutierrez snagged a couple of outs from right field.
  • Solid defense. For the third time in four games, the Bison did not record an error. They nearly turned three double-plays and they watched as centerfielder Will Joseph had a couple highlight-reel moments including a diving catch in the third on a liner from NMHU's Lubby Marrujo.
  • Settling down. After Galbreath gave up two runs in the first, he only allowed one more run over the next four frames. The senior got five fly-ball outs and struck out three.
  • Turning the lineup over. Jacob Campbell, Gutierrez and Wiley represented the seven, eight and nine-hole hitters for the Bison. By the end of the game, they went 7-for-11.
What Went Wrong
  • The Cowboys' first inning was most troublesome for the OBU defense. After a game-opening double from Marrujo, Chase Stewart ripped a two-run homer to left center giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
On The Horizon
  • Tomorrow, the teams will play a pair of seven-inning games at Seminole State starting at 1 p.m.
