Harding Slips by Bison, 6-5

SEARCY, Ark. – Harding University (10-2, 4-0 GAC) benefitted from a two-error play in the eighth and then won in the bottom of the ninth over Oklahoma Baptist (9-3, 3-1 GAC) on Friday at Jerry Moore Field. HU claimed a 6-5 result and stayed unbeaten in Great American Conference play.

Key Leaders What Went Right
  • Rallying. Twice on Friday, OBU was down multiple runs. They responded each time.
  • In the third, Will Joseph came up with a two-out, two-run RBI double down the left-field line and tied the scoreboard at 2. That knock scored Alex Schroeder and Shafer.
  • A few innings later, Shields delivered. The Bison got their first three batters on to base. Then, with two away, Shields smoked a three-run double to center. That gave the Bison a 5-4 advantage, their first of the game.
  • Defensively, OBU got out of multiple jams from the second through fourth frames. In fact, Galbreath and the Bison defense helped strand five Harding base runners that were in scoring position.
What Went Wrong
  • Harding hit two homers in the first courtesy of Collin Helms and Sebastian Martinez.
  • In the fourth, OBU had gotten two outs, but after a wild pitch moved Coulton Doyle into scoring position, Martinez doubled to left field. That increased Harding's lead to 4-2.
  • The eighth-inning errors. The Bison were holding a 5-4 advantage with two out. After a pitching change to William Ellis, Doyle singled, reached second and third base following an error by OBU's catcher and then scored the tying run on another miscue.
  • In the ninth, after OBU was retired in order, Harding's Logan Lacey singled to start the home half. Two batters later, Nathan Bowie brought in his teammate with a double for the game-winning run.
On The Horizon
  • Tomorrow, the two squads will meet for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
