Thornton, Bison Secure Finale Over Cowboys

SEMINOLE – Junior reliever Bryant Thornton got his first save of the season as Oklahoma Baptist completed a four-game sweep of New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at Lloyd Simmons Field. The Bison won 10-8 and improved their record to 6-1.

That record matches the best D2 start through seven games since the 2016 team opened 9-1.

Key Leaders
  • Alex Schroeder and Troy Shields each secured a team-high three hits.
  • Jacob Campbell, Jayden Shafer and Rafael Gutierrez also added a pair of hits. For Campbell and Gutierrez, they registered some clutch, two-out RBI hits for OBU.
  • Nolan Feazle had several solid innings on the mound. He ended up with seven strikeouts, allowed four runs and induced seven fly-ball outs.
  • For Thornton, he closed the final three innings, and really shined in the eighth and ninth frames. The newcomer was able to fan five batters.
What Went Right
  • Starting on fire. Feazle made quick work of NMHU retiring the first six batters. That propelled OBU on the offensive end as it scored seven runs in the first two frames.
  • Schroeder, Shields and Spencer Dickinson all had run-scoring knocks in the opening innings.
  • Fourth inning response. After the Cowboys scored three in the top half of the fourth, the Bison were aided by two big hits from Campbell and Gutierrez. With two out, that pair drove in three runs to push the Bison up 10-4.
  • Thornton. A season ago at College of Marin, the righty secured three saves. On this day, he battled for a hard-earned save. After NMHU scored three unearned runs in the seventh, OBU's new pitcher turned up the defensive pressure and got five punchouts over the eighth and ninth frames. So far through seven contests, OBU's staff has secured five saves.
What Went Wrong
  • From the third through sixth innings, Highlands got its leadoff batter on base. That would aid the Cowboys to five runs and inch closer to OBU's advantage.
  • In the fourth, the visitors scored three which included a two-run bomb by third baseman Taiga Sato. During those middle innings, the Cowboys got ahold of Feazle who allowed four hits.
  • Errors. While not entirely costly, the Bison missed some routine plays that kept NMHU in the game.
On The Horizon
  • On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Bison will travel to Missouri Southern for a non-conference game starting at 3 p.m. The Lions are coming off a three-game sweep of GAC school Ouachita.
