Schroeder, Bison Roll in Season Opener

EDMOND – Senior Alex Schroeder tied the Oklahoma Baptist career home-run record on Thursday morning as the Bison handled Pittsburg State 17-5 at Wendell Simmons Field.

Key Leaders
  • Schroeder went 3-for-3 with two homers and a double along with five RBI. He now has 46 career bombs tying Josh Collazo for most all-time at OBU.
  • Newcomer Will Joseph posted a 2-for-5 showing with a double and two RBI.
  • Jacob Campbell secured two hits and three runs scored while Isiah Lissade added three knocks, including an eighth-inning grand slam.
  • Troy Shields added a home run and drove in two for the green and gold.
  • Pitching starter Brek Galbreath tossed five innings and gave up four runs, one earned and struck out five. The senior got the win as well.
  • Relief pitcher William Ellis was sensational giving up just one run while fanning six. He earned a rare, three-inning save in the process.
What Went Right
  • A great offensive day. The Bison collected 14 hits, seven of which were extra-base knocks. They also drove in 15 runs.
  • OBU scored multiple runs in five of seven frames.
  • Schroeder. The senior started his 2024 with a bang, notching two homers to left. His hit in the seventh was a near-miss-bomb that ended up as a ground-rule double. By the end of the game, he had an unheard of 3.33 slugging percentage.
  • Very good defense. The Bison turned 10 fly-ball outs and four groundouts and got 11 strikeouts from Galbreath and Ellis. Plus, OBU's speed in the outfield was evident. Joseph and fellow newcomer Matt Marsic each tracked down a pair of outs in center and right, respectively.
  • Making routine plays. OBU had only one error in the game. Its infield of Jayden Shafer, Lissade, Campbell and Spencer Dickinson was very solid.
What Went Wrong
  • The Bison only had one subpar inning and that came in the second. A throwing error by Galbreath and passed ball helped the Gorillas score a trio of runs.
On The Horizon
  • Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., the Bison will face Emporia State in Edmond.
