Coming into Wednesday night's contest, there is a log jam of contenders for the Great American Conference Tournament set to begin next week. In a tie for first place with 16 points are Harding and Southern Nazarene. Three teams follow with 15 points: Oklahoma Baptist, Ouachita and East Central.
At the end of the regular season, the top four teams in the standings qualify for the GAC Tournament with the No. 1 seed earning hosting rights.
Earlier this season, SNU defeated OBU 1-0 on a Bella Morgan first-half goal. The Crimson Storm's defense also limited the Bison to just two shots on goal. That was OBU's second-fewest on-target attempts this season.
Here are notes on both teams ahead of Wednesday's match.
Bison Notes
- OBU tied East Central last week, 0-0, despite out-shooting the Tigers 12-7 in on-target looks.
- Freshman keeper Claire Stoermer notched seven saves and recorded her fifth shutout. That's third-most in the conference.
- Over the last few weeks, the Bison's offense has improved. After sitting in fourth for a bit, OBU is second in the GAC averaging 13.53 attempts per match.
- Leading that cause are Lex Williamson and Emma Teague who are ranked top-ten in shots on goal.
- The team is also second with 13 assists.
- Kenas remains one goal off the GAC lead. She has four this fall.
- OBU is one of only two teams (Harding) with three players ranked top-ten in assists. They are Bloomingdale (4), Ashley Bell (4) and Sam Sheffield (3).
- Also, of note offensively, Teague has scored three times, a top-five mark in the GAC.
Crimson Storm Notes
- SNU is on a six-match unbeaten streak. That includes two wins and four ties.
- In their last contest, the Storm played ECU to a 1-1 draw on Nov. 1.
- Southern Nazarene has struggled on the road this season, posting a 1-3-2 record.
- Morgas is the GAC leader with 11 points. She's scored four times with three helpers.
- As a unit, coach Josh Smith's team is third in the GAC in these categories: shots, points and goals.
- Ella Adams is another offensive threat for the Storm. She is fifth in the league in shots (2.73) and has three assists. Her seven points are a top-ten GAC total.
- SNU has arguably the best goalie in the conference. She's Gianna Bonnett and she leads in goals against average (.744) and shutouts (7).
- Bonnett is also second in save percentage (.831).
