Box Score SHAWNEE – Bison Volleyball shut out the Storm with a 3-0 victory to hand Southeastern their second home loss of the season.
The green and gold are back in business after a road sweep of SE Thursday night. The win for the Bison evened the score between the two teams after a loss to the Storm earlier in the season saw the meeting record sit in favor of the blue and yellow. In similar fashion to the previous meeting this season, the visiting team secured a win in enemy territory.
Just in time for Halloween, OBU Volleyball found a few tricks up their sleeve, recovering from a tough loss in the previous week of conference play. The Bison refused to stay down for long, bouncing back from last week's 3-2 loss with a 3-0 victory over the Southeastern Storm.
Set one saw OBU with an impressive comeback to secure a 25-17 final in the opening set. The second frame saw some more fight from the home team but not in enough time to shut down the Bison, totaling a 25-20 set two score. The third and final set ended in favor of the green and gold with a 25-21 score, closing out the set with a clean sweep.
The Bison claimed 57.0 points, 49 kills, four aces, four blocks, 46 assists and 63 digs.
Avery Hellmuth led the green and gold in kills with 13 on the evening.
Jh'Kyah Head added 11 kills for OBU and
Jill Leslie contributed 10. Leslie and
Rylee Unruh each tallied a pair of aces for the Bison. Blocks from Head (3), Hellmuth (2), and Leslie (1) rounded out the OBU defense.
Emily Boyer amassed 38 assists to lead the visitors. Unruh totaled 16 digs,
Lauren Safrit added 13 digs and
Karsyn Hunter finished with 12 digs on the night.
Set 1
In the opening frame, the first four points were all Southeastern. Kills from Leslie and Head put the Bison on the board. Another four-score run for the home team saw OBU down 8-2. The green and gold came to life taking the next five points with kills from Head (2), an ace from Leslie, a block from Head and Hellmuth and an SE error to make it a one-point game. Another kill came across for the Storm, giving the home team a 12-9 lead.
Allie Stricker kicked things into gear for the Bison with a kill that began a 4-0 run for OBU. Boyer added a pair of kills and a solo shot from Leslie totaled up to a 13-12 score to give the visitors their first lead. SE took the next point but the green and gold answered with three of their own to retake the lead, 16-13. From there, the Bison remained in charge. At a 19-16 total, OBU went on another five-score run to make it set point. The final kill came across for the home team, but Hellmuth closed things out with a kill for a 25-17 final in the first set.
Set 2
The second set saw the Bison on the board first with a kill from Stricker. The Storm added a kill to even the score but the green and gold claimed the next five consecutive points for a 6-1 lead. A second kill came across for the home team, but the Bison got back to work, taking the next five points for an 11-2 lead. Although the Storm valiantly fought back, the nine-point deficit ultimately did them in. A 3-0 run from each side brought the total to 14-8. A late five-score run saw SE chip away at the score, totaling a 20-16 score for OBU. Leslie laid down a kill and a pair of home team errors made for a 23-16 total. Head claimed match point with a kill. The Storm added three more points but an error from the blue and yellow secured the second set for the Bison.
Set 3
In the third and final set, the home team took the first two points. With a four-point lead at 7-3 for SE, OBU replied with four consecutive points to tie things up at 7-7. The next three points tied, but an error from OBU and an ace for the Storm gave the home team the lead. The Bison knotted things back up at 12-a-piece, but a pair of kills flipped in favor of the Storm. After another tie a point 16, the green and gold jumped ahead with a couple of points. Point 20 saw another tie, the final tie of the game. The Bison were first to 21 with a block from Leslie and Boyer. Head blocked a shot from the Storm for the next point. The final kill came in for SE, but OBU took the next three points, closing out the set at 25-21 and the evening at 3-0.
