SHAWNEE – Southern Arkansas rolled in 578 yards of offense during its 65-10 win over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Crain Family Stadium.
The Muleriders were evenly balanced, rushing for 283 yards while throwing for 295. Plus, they had 31 first downs compared to 14 by the Bison.
SAU set the tone for the game, which included a 2-hour, 30-minute, lightning and rain delay, with its opening drive. The visitors went 75 yards in eight plays and scored on a Jariq Scales nine-yard run to open the scoring.
OBU got into the mix on its next possession with a 31-yard
Luke Watkins field goal. However, the Muleriders scored added two more touchdown drives with scoring runs by quarterback Judd Barton and Scales to push the scoreboard tally to 21-3.
Speedy wideout
Darius Melton came through with a highlight-reel, 18-yard scoring grab a bit later to bring the score to 21-10. However, that would be the last of the scoring for the green and gold. SAU followed with 44 unanswered points.
Brandon Spencer and
Tyler Johnson led OBU with 10 tackles apiece while
Haydn Thornton added nine stops and two pass break-ups.
Austin Vincent also registered nine tackles for OBU.
Offensively,
Caden Peevey rushed eight times for 38 yards and
Michael Marshall hauled in seven catches for 55 yards.
The Bison will return to action during Homecoming on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
