Bison Knock Off Southern Arkansas, 63-58

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Behind the strength of dominant second and third quarters along with three players scoring in double figures, Oklahoma Baptist won at Southern Arkansas, 63-58, on Saturday in Great American Conference action. It was OBU's first win in Magnolia since Jan. 25, 2018.

The Bison improved to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the GAC with the result.

Key Leaders
  • Jaedyn Getman poured in game-highs with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Jill Leslie was outstanding again as she notched 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
  • Parker Stevenson added 13 points.
  • Madison Chambers contributed eight points on 3-of-6 shooting along with a game-high six assists.
What Went Right
  • OBU's first-half offense. The Bison made both 50 percent from the field and from deep.
  • They also dominated the defensive end, holding the hosts to 25-percent shooting. In the second quarter alone, OBU held the Muleriders to just five points and one field goal.
  • Plus, the green and gold had a 25-16 rebounding advantage in the first 20 minutes.
  • Getman and Leslie. For the second consecutive game, those two Bison frontcourt players caused issues for the opponent's defense. For Leslie, she's made 15-of-20 shots the last two contests, averaged 6.5 rebounds and blocked four shots.
  • Chambers. The fifth-year senior's performance against SAU should be noted. She provided a steady hand with six assists and added some important shots in the second and third quarters as the Bison pulled away.
  • Until the fourth quarter, OBU never let the hosts get into much of a rhythm. In fact, its defense early in the third helped the Bison reel off a 10-0 run to start the third. At the 6:47 mark, a Stevenson layup boosted OBU's lead to 48-27.
What Went Wrong
  • Defense in the fourth. There was some uneasiness on the Bison bench as SAU outscored the Bison 20-8 in the final period.
  • There were 26 turnovers for OBU. However, SAU never really capitalized on those due in large part to the Bison's defensive and rebounding effort.
On the Horizon
  • A date with the last unbeaten team and 5th-ranked Southern Nazarene (16-0) is on the schedule Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. from the Noble Complex.
