Northeastern State Topples Bison, 12-7

TAHLEQUAH – Northeastern State scored a half-dozen runs in the final innings against Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday and won 12-7 at Rousey Field.

The Bison (28-20) will now move on to prepare for Arkansas Tech this coming Friday, May 5 in the Great American Conference Tournament.

Coby Tweten homered in the first, a three-run shot, that forced OBU to play catch-up the rest of the way. NSU added three more runs in the second before OBU started its comeback run.

Third-inning action brought a pair of runs. Jayden Shafer went first-pitch swinging to center field which pushed home Austin Gonzales for the team's first run. Two batters later, senior Kade Self added a two-out RBI single to bring the tally to 6-2.

Three innings passed before the green and gold inched closer. During the sixth, Dan Pruitt and Self each drove in runs with singles to bring the Bison within two, 6-4. That momentum carried over a frame later.

Rafael Gutierrez, Isiah Lissade and Shafer got on base with a hit and two walks, respectively, to bring Shafer to the plate. The newcomer then delivered a hit to center and watched as Gutierrez found home. Down 6-5, the Bison later got bases-loaded walks for Alex Schroeder and Self to take a 7-6 lead.

That advantage was short-lived, though.

In the bottom of the seventh, NSU went back in front as four of its first five batters attained hits. There was an RBI double from Tweten who later scored on a wild pitch. Plus, Brady Evans added a run-scoring single.

That moved the score to 9-7 and the hosts stayed in front the rest of the way.

Self ended up with two hits and three RBI to move his single-season total to 71 while Shafer collected a pair of hits.
