ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Ouachita pulled away with four runs in the seventh and eighth frames to deal Oklahoma Baptist a 10-5 Great American Conference defeat on Saturday. With that result, the Bison moved their record to 22-17 and 14-13 in the GAC.
The green and gold struck first early on.
Dan Pruitt singled and after a wild pitch, two Bison were standing in scoring position.
Kade Self followed with a single to left and pushed
Jayden Shafer across home.
That 1-0 tally remained until the bottom of the fourth. Before the Tigers' plate appearances that frame, Bison starter
Ryan Turbeville notched four strikeouts and allowed two hits.
Then in the fourth, Ouachita tied the contest. Isaac Nowell doubled before Wyatt Core singled to center. In that same sequence, an outfield error brought the tying run home.
A frame later, and after the Bison left two stranded in the top of the fifth, Ouachita scored four more. Cade Burris tripled to start the frame before an RBI single by Dustin Bermudez broke the 1-1 tie. The hosts added three more after that including a balk which scored Michael Quinones.
Each team tallied a single run in the sixth before the Bison nearly rallied in the seventh. Down 6-2, Shafer smoked a two-run double to right center and pushed teammates
Isiah Lissade and
Austin Gonzales across home. A few batters later, Self singled to center and drove in the team's fifth run. OBU still had two outs to work with after that but could not find the equalizing hit.
Two frames passed before Ouachita scored three times in the eighth. And those runs came after the Bison appeared to pick off G. Allen at first. After Allen was called safe with two out, there were two run-scoring singles by Nowell and Core. Those hits made the tally 9-5 and the Tigers' tenth run came via error.
For the Bison, only Gonzales reached base in the final two frames with a double in the eighth.
By game's end, Self had three hits and three RBI while Lissade and Gonzales each tallied two hits.
Next on the schedule for the Bison is a road date against Emporia State on April 18.
