Emporia State Triumphs Over OBU in Edmond

EDMOND – Emporia State erased a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the second en route to a 17-9 win over Oklahoma Baptist on Friday during the Central Oklahoma First Pitch Classic.

The Hornets notched 12 hits which included two grand slams and a three-run homer during their victory over the Bison.

Before Emporia got its offense cranking, it was OBU that started off strong. In the second, Alex Schroeder had a solo shot before Brandon Brewer and Isiah Lissade each drove in two with a double and single, respectively.

But after that, it was all Hornets.

Emporia dug into its five-run deficit in the home half of the second after a couple of Bison errors allowed two to score. Then, with the bases juiced, Gibrian Pena hit a shot to right field and gave his team a 7-5 advantage.

OBU changed pitchers after that and over the next three innings, Jake Hamilton turned in some solid results. Until issuing a walk and hit-by-pitch in the sixth, Hamilton struck out eight batters, scattered just two hits and kept the score at 7-5.

In that time, though, the green and gold's offense couldn't get going. Just one hit came OBU's way and that was delivered by Gabe Irwin who notched a two-out single in the third.

Emporia then ballooned its two-run advantage to seven in the bottom of the sixth. In that frame, TJ Racherbaumer hit the team's second grand slam, this one down the right-field line. At that point it was 12-5.

The Bison did add a few scores later with a two-run Dan Pruitt homer, Irwin RBI single and Brewer run-scoring single in the ninth to round out the team's scoring efforts.

Tomorrow, the Bison will play Pittsburg State at 4 p.m. in Edmond.
