SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist notched a season-high 16 hits which included five homers during its 16-13 win over Emporia State on Wednesday. With the win, OBU evened its record at 7-7.
OBU got contributions from many.
Isiah Lissade and
Trey Furrey each had three hits while
Alex Schroeder dialed up two homers.
Kade Self added a double and long ball while newcomer
Jayden Shafer cranked out another homer. Additionally,
Troy Shields notched a solo shot.
After the Hornets got a three-run blast in the first, the green and gold came back with six in their first inning of offensive work.
Following a Lissade hit, a couple walks and error by the visitors, the Bison tied the game at 3-3 on a two-run double by Self to right center.
Dan Pruitt and Shafer scored those runs before Furrey pushed two more across with a single up the middle. OBU's final run of the frame, its sixth, came via an RBI groundout by Shields.
Then in the second and third frames, the Bison tallied two runs apiece. Schroeder smacked a two-run blast to right before
Jose Parga and Lissade drove in runs in the third. Those latter scores made the tally 10-3.
During that time, OBU relief pitcher
Jordan Brewer was able to shut out Emporia as the Bison pulled ahead. Brewer only allowed a hit and struck out three.
Then from the fourth through sixth frames, the Hornets rallied. Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings brought the tally to 10-5. In the sixth, a three-run inning was highlighted by a two-run triple by Jake Bucovetsky. That hit put Bison fans on the edge of their seat as it brought the deficit to three, 10-7.
However, the Bison offense came back again to deliver some breathing room late. In fact, in the bottom of the sixth, Schroeder, Self and Shields all homered. It was 13-8 heading to the seventh.
After that, the only time Emporia threatened again was with a grand slam in the ninth with the score in hand.
On March 3, the green and gold will return to conference action at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
