SHAWNEE – Jayden Shafer had a game-high three hits and the Oklahoma Baptist pitching staff was superb as the Bison defeated Pittsburg State 9-1 on Tuesday at Bobby Cox Field at Ford Park.
OBU's win halted PSU's (8-4) five-game winning streak while the green and gold moved to 4-6.
On the pitching front, the Bison trotted out five hurlers and only gave up one run and four hits to the Gorillas.
Ryan Turbeville tossed the first three frames and got a combined nine groundouts and flyouts while only allowing a hit.
Garrett Kellogg-Clarke followed with two scoreless frames and three strikeouts while
Logan Kimbro did the same in the sixth and seventh innings.
Newcomer
Cameron Pool added three strikeouts as well in the ninth. Also of note, PSU's run total was its lowest of the season.
The Bison's offensive efforts were once again very good against the Gorillas. Through two matchups this season with PSU, OBU has tallied a combined 30 runs.
Things got going for the hosts in the second when
Jose Parga dropped a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line which broke the scoreless tie. After Turbeville retired the side in the top of third, OBU came back for two more runs.
Trey Furrey's RBI groundout to first scored Shafer before a wild pitch allowed
Dan Pruitt to score. That doubled the Bison's lead to 4-0.
OBU then put the game out of reach in the fifth. Highlighting that four-run inning were RBI from Furrey,
Gabe Irwin and
Troy Shields.
For good measure, a solo homer from Shafer, that sailed just inside the left foul post, pushed the Bison's lead to 9-0 in the sixth. This year, Shafer leads the team with a .500 average and .769 slugging mark.
Next on the schedule is a GAC three-game series with Harding starting Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
