EMPORIA, Kan. – Kayleigh Jones notched her third career no-hitter in OBU's 4-0 shutout victory over Emporia State (6-4, 0-0 MIAA) to complete a sweep of Sunday's competition at the ESU Classic. Oklahoma Baptist (11-2, 0-0 GAC) took down Newman (5-5, 0-0 MIAA) by a 9-3 tally earlier in the day.
GAME ONE
The Bison picked up win number 10 on the strength of its bats and freshman pitcher, Jaycee Shaffer. OBU charted 11 hits for the fifth time this season, while Shaffer twirled a four-hit complete game with four strikeouts. It is Shaffer's first career win on Bison Hill.
In the box, Emily Adler and Samantha Campos went 2-3, highlighted by three RBIs from Campos. Adler also scored two runs, a tie for the team-high with Reagan Ford.
Oklahoma Baptist didn't waste any time in the opening frame, exploding for six runs.
After a couple of hits from Adi Reese and E. Adler, the bases were loaded. The next two at-bats resulted in walks that crossed two Bison for a 2-0 lead.
Ally Ryan would then single up the middle to plate another before Alleyna Rushing brought Kennedy Clark across for OBU's fifth run of the stanza. Then Ryan made her way around for the final score following a Ford ground-out.
Newman broke through for a score in the third, but the success was short-lived as Oklahoma Baptist returned the favor at the top of the fourth.
By the sixth, the score read 7-3, OBU. Campos and Zoey Johnson extended the Bison advantage by two in the final innings to cement the victory.
GAME TWO
Jones punched out 16 batters, tying her single-game career-high, without surrendering a single hit against the Hornets. She nearly collected the program's second perfect game, as a walk in the fifth erased the historic opportunity. With the win, Jones improved her record to 8-1.
OBU tallied three hits through the contest's first two frames, but nothing came of it. Finally, E. Adler's single into left drove in Ford to break the scoreboard's silence.
The Bison tacked on a couple more in the next inning, courtesy of Ford and Reese, before Ryan brought around Clark for the last score.
Ford recorded her third career three-hit game and drove in a run, while Clark and Ryan tallied two hits apiece.
Oklahoma Baptist will make its home debut on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in a doubleheader against Newman. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
