Bison Outlast Jets To Sweep Midweek Series

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist (13-2, 0-0 GAC) pulled off back-to-back walk-offs to escape Newman (5-7, 0-0 MIAA) and sweep the regular-season series against the Jets. The Bison went toe-to-toe with NU in two extra-inning contests, besting the Jets 3-2 in game one before capping the day with a 2-1 win in the finale.

Newman put on a performance unlike their 9-3 loss against OBU on Sunday. Their pitching staff, led by Jackie Gold and Madison Dewitt, surrendered 10 hits through two games. A figure much less than the 11 hits NU gave up versus the Bison in one game a few days ago.

However, outstanding play from the OBU pitchers Kayleigh Jones, Jaycee Shaffer, Aspen Younce, and Morgan Max ruled the day.

Jones picked up both wins, bringing her season record to 10-1, in relief work. She entered in the top of the sixth in game one with the matchup tied and collected five strikeouts before fanning five more in the nightcap. Freshman Jaycee Shaffer made her second career start in game two, punching out two batters without surrendering an earned run.

Younce and Max clocked 3.0 and 2.0 innings of work in game one. Each gave up one earned run while Younce led the duo with two strikeouts.

GAME ONE

OBU prevailed victorious in the eight-inning contest after the visiting team gave them everything they could handle. Newman racked up 10 hits, while the Bison charted six and committed two errors. Still, a resilient Bison squad pulled out the win.

Newman quickly got on board in the first, courtesy of a Madi Canez single. When it was OBU's turn at the bottom of the frame, Samantha Campos put the green and gold ahead 2-1 after a moonshot over right center.

After two scoreless innings, Newman tied the tally with a double.

In the seventh, Jones retired the Jets 1-2-3, before NU returned the favor at the bottom of the frame to prompt extras. Again, excellent fielding from the Bison defense gave OBU a fighting chance.

Emily Adler singled to advance Adi Reese to third, who was placed on second due to NCAA rules, to put Oklahoma Baptist in scoring position. Then a Campos sacrifice fly into left crossed Reese for the walk-off victory.

Campos led all Bison hitters with three RBIs while five others registered hits.

GAME TWO

The Newman resistance stiffened in the finale, as the scoreboard remained blank for the first four innings. NU went on to strike first in the fifth, courtesy of an unearned run for a 1-0 lead.

OBU responded in the sixth, as E. Adler shot a ball down the left-field line to score Alleyna Rushing. But again, the score sat gridlocked after seven innings.

A scoreless eighth and two strikeouts at the top of the ninth allowed E. Adler to drive in Reagan Ford for the second straight triumph.

Campos tallied two hits, while E. Adler recorded a game-high three RBIs.

Oklahoma Baptist sets its sights on GAC foe Harding, who they'll play in a three-game series starting on Friday, Feb. 24. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
