ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Missouri Western State scored four times in the second on its way to a 7-3 win over Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Clyde Berry Field.
OBU was led by
Kade Self's three hits while
Dan Pruitt and
Troy Shields each collected two. On the mound,
Roy Peguero came on in relief the last two frames and struck out two while not allowing a hit.
After each team was retired in order in the first, MWSU came back in the second to gain an early advantage.
The Griffons' first four batters singled off OBU pitching with hits from Jayden Singleton and Riley Higgins driving in two runs. After a
Ryan Turbeville strike out in the fifth at-bat, Missouri Western's Travis Wiese provided another run-scoring single with a shot to center. To cap off MWSU's inning, Bryant Jackson singled through the left side and plated Riley Higgins.
That 4-0 score remained until the green and gold got two back in the fourth.
In the top half of the fourth, Self singled to center which moved teammate
Alex Schroeder to third. Two batters later,
Jayden Shafer reached on a fielder's choice which drove home Schroeder. Shields then got in the action with a two-out double down the left-field line and watched as Self provided OBU's second run.
After that fourth inning, though, Missouri Western's pitching buckled down the Bison attack. Over the last five frames, OBU tallied one run and collected several hits. However, there were a few missed chances with runners on the base paths.
For the Griffons, they added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for their final tallies. Wiese added his second RBI hit while Will Courtney and Singleton drove in two others.
Tomorrow, the Bison will wrap up the Henderson State Invitational with an 11 a.m. game against Newman.
