Week 6 Preview: Bison at SWOSU

SHAWNEE – One of Oklahoma Baptist's main rivals is on the schedule to start the week. On Oct. 3, the Bison travel to Southwestern Oklahoma State (8-4, 3-1 GAC) for a 6 p.m. match inside Pioneer Cellular Event Center. Going into the match, both the Bison and Bulldogs are tied for third in the league.

In series history, OBU has won seven of the last eight matches including sweeping last year's regular-season contests.  Dating back to 2011, the green and gold lead the series 16-4.

Bison Notes
  • OBU won twice last week against Southern Nazarene and Southeastern Oklahoma State.
  • Those victories boosted the team's record to 9-6 and 3-1 in GAC play.
  • Outside hitters Jenna West and D'Erricka Frierson each averaged 3.14 kills last week.
  • Middle blocker Jill Leslie, the GAC Defensive Player of the Week, was a force defensively. She averaged 1.43 blocks per set over seven sets.
  • Leslie moved into fifth in the league (0.94) in blocks with her efforts.
  • Additionally, Leslie nearly broke the previous OBU record for attack percentage in a match. She hit .900 against SE with nine kills, missing the record by a single kill.
  • Setter Rylee Martin averaged 6.43 assists. Over her last three matches, she's reached at least 22 assists each time and ranks seventh in the GAC.
  • Martin, along with freshman Emily Boyer, has helped OBU rank 24th in the country in assists. The team averages 12.48 per set.
  • OBU is also hitting .240 as a team which ranks 31st in Division II and first in the GAC.
Bulldogs Notes
  • Coach Josh Collins' team is coming off a 3-1 win against SNU on Sept. 28. The Bulldogs have won five of their last six matches.
  • Lacy Mott leads SWOSU. Her 3.90 kills per set is good for third in the GAC. She has attained as many as 26 kills this year, that total coming Sept. 19 against East Central.
  • As a unit, Southwestern ranks fifth in the league in hitting percentage (.200). It also is second, trailing OBU, in the GAC in assists (12.02).
  • Pacing the individual front in assists is Terez Chavez. She averages 5.26 per set.
  • On the defensive front, the Bulldogs have the conference leader in blocks: Zoey Sparks. Her 1.18 average is also 31st in the nation.
  • Additionally, defensive specialist Jada Permenter ranks fourth in digs (4.48).
