Doomes Records Double-Double, OBU Bests OUA 79-55

SHAWNEE – Behind a career night from Trey Doomes, Oklahoma Baptist (7-5, 4-2 GAC) re-entered the victory column following a dominant 79-55 win over Ouachita Baptist (4-6, 2-4 GAC) inside the Noble Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Doomes coupled a team-high 20 points with 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of his career. In fact, it is the first double-double of any Bison this season.

OBU moves to 7-5 overall with a 4-2 record in Great American Conference play.

Coming off a disappointing loss on Thursday night, OBU came out with a vengeance. The Bison improved from a 40% field goal percentage in the first half two nights ago to a 54.5% shooting clip in the opening stanza on Saturday. Furthermore, Oklahoma Baptist missed just two free throws compared to five in the first the other night.

The Bison finished the game with a season-high 61.5% field-goal percentage after knocking down 32 shots. OBU also charted its best rate from three-point land in 2022-23, nailing 9-16 for a 56.3% mark.

The home team's advantages over the Tigers stretched to the boards (38-21), points in the paint (40-32), and bench points (32-7). Oklahoma Baptist was so dominant today that OUA never led in the contest.

Out of the gate, OBU ran the score up 11-2 following a Doomes free-throw make. The lead reached 21-12 at 10:40 before the opposition started to make shots and cut into the deficit.

With five minutes remaining, Ouachita trailed by four, 25-21, after OUA's Kobe Dunlap netted a three-pointer.

The Tigers threatened under the three-minute mark following a free-throw make to draw the contest 27-26, but it was to no avail as the Bison took a one-point lead into intermission.

Oklahoma Baptist cranked the heat up in the second half, charting a sizzling 66.67% (20-30) field-goal percentage from the floor. Seven of 11 attempts from beyond the arc touched the bottom of the net to cap a 63.6% mark from deep.

The closing frame saw 49 points from the Bison, with its lead reaching as far as 25. Those numbers were enough for OBU to claim its fourth conference victory of the year.

Aside from Doomes stat-sheet-stuffing night, freshman Ethan Scott matched his career-high of 12 points on 4-6 shooting. Scott made four triples for the second time this season, as all his shots came from beyond the arc.

Bradley Akhile reached double-figures for the third time in 2022-23, scoring 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting night. Point guard Paul King, who scored seven points, masked his shooting woes with five rebounds, four assists, and a steal.

Ricky Brown chipped in eight points, while Trey Green and Nigel Wilcox recorded six points.

Oklahoma Baptist hits the road to Arkansas for the first time this season next Thursday, Jan. 12, for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against GAC foe Harding. The Bisons have a 5-7 overall record, including a 1-5 mark in conference play.
