ALVA – Oklahoma Baptist freshman
Jaedyn Getman scored a season-high 23 points to lead the Bison to a 68-66 win at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday.
OBU snapped a three-game losing streak in the process and improved to 11-5 and 7-3 in Great American Conference play.
In the first 10 minutes of action, the scoreboard was close throughout. Northwestern scored 12 of its 17 first-quarter points in the paint while OBU was aided by
Malou Savanna's two 3-pointers in the final few minutes of the stanza.
Heading to the second down by two, the Bison tied things at 19 on two Getman freebies. And then a possession later, after a few OBU chances to secure a steal, Northwestern's Carly Craig hit a head-dropping three from the top to push the Rangers back up 22-19 at 6:45.
After that, the green and gold defense limited Northwestern to five points. But, the Bison did miss some chances to boost their point total as two breakaway steals and four free throws weren't converted. That said, OBU trailed by just five, 32-27, heading into the locker room.
In the third, OBU shook off the small disadvantage with the help of
Erika Ankney and Getman. Down 38-33, Getman swished a three before a runner from Ankney tied the game at 38 with 6:20 left. Following that Bison make, the visitors went ahead as many as six after a put-back from
Sydney Duncan. The newcomer's shot moved the tally to 50-44 and heading to the fourth it was 51-50 OBU.
Then in the final period, the score went back and forth until the end. A massive three by Ankney pushed the Bison up 66-63 before Northwestern later tied it on an and-one by Talayah Thomas. OBU's defense did hold up pretty well in the fourth though with the help of a couple blocks by
Sierra Copeland.
Getman then delivered some of the biggest points of her career. With 44 seconds left, she was fouled in the paint. Her two free throws that followed were true.
On the game's final possession, OBU corralled around Camille Thomas' paint shot which missed as time expired.
Next on the schedule is a home game on Jan. 23 against Southern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m.
