SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist (4-5-1, 3-0-1 GAC) remained unbeaten in Great American Conference play after a 3-2 win at home against East Central on Thursday.
OBU had no issues throughout the 90 minutes getting shots, as it took 13 more attempts (22 to 9) than the visitors. And it didn't take long for the green and gold to jump in front.
At the 1:52 mark, senior
Katie Fowler tapped a pass to
Makenzy Morgan who fired near the 18. Her right-footed boot lifted over Tigers goalie Baylee Hensley into center-net. It was Morgan's first goal of the year.
The Bison added two more shots on goal from
Olivia Kenas and
Annabelle Joski before doubling their match lead. In the 29th minute, Fowler got a rebounded shot back to her right foot and fired once more, this one reaching nylon. That was her sixth goal of the season, which is one off the GAC lead.
That 2-0 score remained until 10 minutes after halftime.
At the 54:17 mark, ECU's Kaylee Bruce scored off a pass from teammate Olivia Witte, cutting the match lead in half. Despite giving up that goal, OBU didn't allow the visitors to tie, and later found the eventual game-clinching goal.
Kaylee Swaner's first goal of the year was delivered in the 71st minute. As she patrolled near the right post,
Alanna Bloomingdale sent a perfect cross from about 25 yards out and watched as Swaner headed it home.
ECU did add a penalty-kick goal after that but OBU didn't allow another on-goal attempt in the final 12:37.
The Bison will return to action in a week, Oct. 6, when they travel to GAC preseason favorite Southwestern Oklahoma State.
