Hot Start Fizzles as OBU Suffers Defeat at UAM

MONTICELLO, Ark. – After opening up the game with a score on the first play from scrimmage, Oklahoma Baptist (0-2, 0-2 GAC) saw their momentum stall as Arkansas-Monticello (2-0, 2-0 GAC) defeated OBU 40-17 inside Leslie Convoy Cotton Boll Stadium on Saturday night.

Quarterback Dayton Wolfe and wide receiver Keilahn Harris connected for a 65-yard touchdown 13 seconds into the game to put the Bison up 7-0 early, but the Boll Weevils answered in a big way.

UAM countered with 20 points in the first, courtesy of two rushing touchdowns and a 20-yard dart to Jonero Scott from quarterback Demilon Brown. The Boll Weevils carried the same energy into the next quarter, tacking on 20 more points.

Meanwhile, OBU mustered just three points with a field goal to draw the tally 40-10 going into the break.

Coming out of the half, the Bison showed signs of life, forcing three consecutive three and outs. Still, Arkansas-Monticello refused to budge as the teams closed the quarter without a score.

Following a quarterback change, redshirt sophomore Seth Streeter led a nine-play, 49-yard, touchdown drive in the fourth to register OBU's final points. Jaxon Canard charged his way up the middle for an eight-yard touchdown, the first score of his career.

The defense would force another three and out the next drive, but it was to no avail as UAM closed out tonight's victory.

Arkansas-Monticello outgained Oklahoma Baptist 385-353 in total yards, with the Bison giving up 282 yards on the ground. The OBU passing attack accounted for 248 yards and one touchdown, led by Harris' 94-yard performance. The wideout caught four passes to lead the receiver corps.

Three different quarterbacks took snaps tonight, with Dayton Wolfe getting the start. Wolfe threw for 108 yards and two interceptions before being relieved by Aidan Thompson. Thompson finished with 124 yards through the air as he also threw two picks. Streeter rounded out the bunch, completing two passes for 16 yards.

Buddy Bizzell led the Bison with 44 yards on the ground, while Carnard chimed in 23. Additionally, EJ Moore carried the ball four times for 22 yards.

Furthermore, receivers Braden Phipps and Michael Marshall caught four passes apiece for 41 and 38 yards.

Defensively, defensive back Kaleb Peters and linebacker Elijah Tomlin posted seven tackles apiece. Peters recorded the first interception of his career, while Tomlin led the Bison defense with 1.5 tackles-for-loss. Other notables were Chase Whitebear and Malik Allen, who finished with five and four tackles.

Oklahoma Baptist will remain on the road for another week, traveling to Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-2, 0-2 GAC) for a 6:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday, September 17.
