Strong Defense Keys Bison Win

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist pitcher Bo Dallas had another solid outing and got some great defensive play from his teammates during a 5-2 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Friday in Great American Conference play.

Dallas (4-3) tossed a career-high nine frames, fanned five batters and induced 15 flyouts.

Second-inning action was a key point for both the Bison offense and defense. Before the bats came up, Northwestern threatened with bases loaded with just one out before a 6-4-3 double play was turned by Jose Parga, Ramon Gomez and Dan Pruitt.

That momentum carried over for the green and gold. In the home half of the second, a lead-off single by Kade Self was followed up by a two-run blast from Gomez which broke the scoreless tie. A few sequences later, a fielder's choice RBI by Walker Keller resulted into a Rangers error and led Cade Kissel and Trey Furrey home.

It was 4-0 Bison at that point.

The visitors got a run back in the third courtesy of a two-out RBI single from Blake Hoffman. However, Dallas limited the damage to just that and later got a flyout of Shaughn Kelly to left fielder Isiah Lissade to end the inning.

Lissade backed up that defensive play a little later with a two-out single scoring Kissel. It was 5-1 following that hit.

Over the rest of the game, just one more run came across. In the fifth, Northwestern's Brandon Holdren drove in Bryan Guerrero with a single to center.

With a 5-2 advantage, Dallas really got into gear for the Bison in the final four innings. He allowed just two hits. In the other dugout, NWOSU's Ethan Swanson was really good as well. After entering the game in the second, he wound up tossing seven frames and struck out 10.

There was some danger in the ninth for the OBU. Hayden Priest singled to start before Joseph Frisby rocked a shot to right center. That blast wound up in the glove of a leaping Kissel which secured the first out of the frame.  Dallas then retired the next two batters.

Tomorrow, the two squads will meet at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
