WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Bison took game one of the day 12-10 after resuming play following last night's postponement and fell 9-8 in the finale to split the last day of their series with Southwestern Oklahoma State (3-10, 2-4 GAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Oklahoma Baptist (12-7, 4-2 GAC) prevailed victorious in game one with two runs in the top of the extra inning, followed by a shutout in the bottom of the frame. OBU charted 13 hits to SWOSU's 12, the second-highest total of the season.
However, the runs came late as Southwestern hopped on the board early, scoring three in the opening frame.
The Bison responded with two scores in the next inning, courtesy of a Samantha Campos solo home run and a Sammie Greene double that crossed Mia Moddelmog. The Bulldogs kept their train going, reeling off four more at the bottom of fourth for a 7-2 lead.
After a scoreless third, Oklahoma Baptist tallied two with the help of a Moddelmog home run and Aileen Avelar score. Going into the seventh, the score read 8-4.
The Bison erupted for six runs to go up 10-8 in the inning, turning three SWOSU errors into positives. Moddelmog scored Jocee Sparks off a single for the first score, Avelar brought around two with a single, and a Greene plated the eighth run.
Back-to-back Bulldog errors contributed to the last two scores of the inning.
Then, Southwestern tied the game 10-all at the bottom of the frame before the game was brought to a halt.
OBU would open the day at noon with a two-run inning in extras, courtesy of solo shots from Samantha Campos and Emily Smith. Kayleigh Jones came in as relief to close out the game, striking out one while the defense handled the rest.
Campos led the Bison with a 4-5 showing at the plate, two home runs, and two RBIs. Three others, Moddelmog, Avelar, and Greene, would tally two RBIs apiece. Â
Jones earns the save, finishing out the game in relief for Shianne Eddings. Eddings pitched 6.0 innings, struck out six, and allowed four earned runs. Additionally, Aspen Younce saw 1.0 innings worth of action as she struck two and faced 10.
In the finale, nine runs were scored by the third inning. The Bison led 5-4 and added to their advantage with a Avelar sacrifice fly to plate Emily Richardson.
SWOSU countered with a scoring run in the bottom of the frame before tacking on three more in the fourth.
Finally, after two scoreless innings, Oklahoma Baptist got back on track to cut into their deficit with two runs in the sixth. Jocee Sparks started the run with a single to plate Sammie Greene, while an Emily Richardson single tied the contest eight-all.
Unfortunately, a Southwestern double into left-field broke the knot as they won the game in walk-off fashion.
Adi Reese went 2-3 in the batter's box, tallying three RBIs and the only home run for the Bison. Richardson also collected two RBIs, as she was 2-3.
The remaining RBIs came from Sparks, Avelar, and Campos.
Four Bison entered the circle in the game with Aspen Younce (5-2) crediting the most time. Younce faced 10 batters, struck out four, and allowed one run through 3.0 innings of work. She was also credited with the loss.
Aileen Avelar made her first pitching appearance of the season, facing 14 batters, while Shianne Eddings and Jones concluded the rotation.
On Tuesday, Oklahoma Baptist will return to action for a midweek doubleheader with GAC foe Southern Nazarene University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the SNU Softball Field in Bethany, Okla.
