Bison Register Late-Inning Comeback at ECU

ADA, Okla. – Oklahoma Baptist received contributions from many during its 13-12 comeback win at East Central on Saturday in Ada. Down 12-7 heading to the seventh, OBU scored six straight, all on home runs, to take the series opener against the Tigers.

With the result, the Bison improved to 9-10 and 5-5 in GAC play.

Before the last three frames, the Bison had gotten off to a decent start. In the fifth with the game tied at 2-2, Kade Self and Ramon Gomez each had RBI singles before Self scored on a double play. That run pushed the OBU lead to 5-2.

That momentum quickly subsided, though, in the home half of the fifth. East Central wound up sending 14 batters to the plate and scored a whopping nine runs. The host Tigers jumped ahead 6-5 on a two-run single by Tanner Collins. A few batters later, Britton Sperry, Colton Schaper-Kotter and Mason Glowacki hit three consecutive doubles and moved the score to 11-5.

After the sixth, in which both teams registered runs, the Tigers took a five-run lead at 12-7. OBU then rallied.

It started on the mound for the green and gold. Sam Gamboa had his best outing of the year as he tossed the last four frames and struck out an impressive nine batters.

Offensively, the Bison started cracking at the deficit with a two-run bomb in the seventh from Brandon Brewer. An inning later, and down 12-9, Isiah Lissade connected with a two-out, three-run homer to left field. That tied the game.

Then in the ninth, Self found another two-out hit, this one a solo shot to left. It was his second homer of the game. Gamboa then sealed the comeback victory in the bottom half of the inning. He faced four batters, allowed a single but struck out the rest.

Tomorrow, the two teams will meet again for a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Ken Turner Field.
