ALVA, Okla. – Washburn used a flurry of Oklahoma Baptist errors to defeat the Bison 7-3 on Friday at the Northwestern Rangers Festival.
OBU (2-2) was credited for eight miscues, the most its ever had in the DII era. Of the seven runs the Ichabods scored, only one of those was earned.
Before Washburn got in front, the green and gold secured the game's first lead courtesy of
Walker Keller. In the top of the first, Keller smacked a triple to the right-center gap and plated
Ramon Gomez who had walked earlier.
Following two Bison strikeouts, the Ichabods entered the batter's box and got a 2-1 lead.
OBU started the frame with two outs. However, Washburn followed with hits from Zion Bowlin and Parker Dunn. The latter of those hits from Dunn saw an outfield error, pushing the two Ichabod base runners into scoring position. In the next at-bat, Brett Ingram drove his teammates in with a single to right.
That 2-1 score stayed the same until the fourth as the Bison were retired in order from the second through the fourth frames.
In the home half of the fourth, a two-out error along the infield allowed Easton Bruce to round home. An inning later, another two-out mistake in left allowed Bowlin to push the score to 4-1.
OBU did manage to pull the game within one, 4-3, a couple innings later. A sacrifice fly by
Alex Schroeder and RBI groundout from
Trey Furrey in the sixth gave the Bison some momentum.
However, it would not continue, and Washburn ended up tallying a trio of runs in the eighth. In fact, the Bison committed two more two-out errors in that frame and allowed the Ichabods to extend their lead to 7-3.
Offensively, the Bison did not fare as well as they did last weekend at Edmond, going 5-for-29. Pitching-wise,
Bo Dallas and
Devin Crawford led the Bison staff with nine combined strikeouts and only issued two walks.
Tomorrow, OBU will face off against New Mexico Highlands at 11 a.m. in Alva.
